AdoptMeApp Shutdown Information and How YOU Can Help!

last update 8/23/23

In Fall 2023 AdoptMeApp will cease operations
unless acquired.

We thank our technology partners (Chameleon & ShelterBuddy), our shelter partners (list on home page), and of course our thousands of users for their support over our 9 year journey! Together we have enabled our partner shelters to save countless shelter pets’ lives with their over 250K posts!

[We apologize to our shelter partners and users if this is the first you heard about our situation. You will be getting an informative email shortly but it will take us some time to send all of those out.]

What is AdoptMeApp? AdoptMeApp enables animal shelter volunteers, fosters and staff to easily and very quickly insert captioned photos and videos of adoptable pets right into the shelters’ online pet profiles. This media is placed into the AdoptMeApp diary which is automatically pulled into the pet profile by the shelter’s animal management system. AdoptMeApp is fully automated and does not require any staff time or oversight. To find out more please visit adoptmeapp.org.

AdoptMeApp is amazingly successful in so many ways — number and quality of postings, number of partner shelters, number of active and registered users — but it is no longer possible for us to continue with zero funding as we have been doing, partly because our success requires a step-up in the level of maintenance and third-party services. In case you are not aware — all of us, Cynthia, Rob, Frank, John and Frédéric — have thus far been volunteers and Cynthia has been personally paying for all expenses. Please visit our website adoptmeapp.org for app information, videos, and a live feed of the AdoptMeApp postings. (For the information we provide to our users visit Tips and Tricks.)

Due to the way AdoptMeApp came into existence it is not possible for us to turn AdoptMeApp into a non-profit nor to generate revenue. However if another business entity acquires AdoptMeApp both of these are achievable. The acquiring entity can be a commercial corporation, an existing non-profit, or a non-profit created specifically to absorb AdoptMeApp.

Please spread the word to your networks to help us find an acquirer!

Below are some of the current statistics that demonstrate the impact AdoptMeApp has had on companion animal sheltering, particularly for dogs and cats.

  • 210K AdoptMeApp posts (see them all at adoptmeapp.org)
  • Across all shelter pets, the AdoptMeApp diary widget averages 40,000 views per day for a current run rate of 15M/views/year. All of these views are by people seeking an adoptable pet.
We have already built a sponsorship capability into the diary widget, see prototype here. A sponsor would have their messages seen 40K per day!

These numbers could become exponentially higher when shelters embed the shelter-wide version of the widget on their homepage, and of course as we add more shelter partners. Our diary widget can also be a source of revenue, as it has been designed to include sponsorship messages.
  • On average 170 posts/day
  • Peak posts in one day = 340 posts on 3/11/2023
  • New user signups every day = from 1-25+
  • 1,895 active users in the last 24 months; total of 3,871 registered users from our start that have made at least one post (most of our users are volunteers who sometimes do not stay at a shelter for a prolonged period of time)
  • 22,571 shelter pets had at least one post in last 24 months, 51,811 shelter pets have AdoptMeApp diaries (i.e. have at least at one post)
  • 31+ AdoptMeApp partner shelters, including some of the largest and most influential in the world (listed at adoptmeapp.org). 80% are Chameleon–based (the others are ShelterBuddy-based with one Shelterluv-based).
  • Because of resource constraints we have not been able to do adequate marketing, therefore almost all of these shelter partners approached AdoptMeApp via word-of-mouth.
  • Zero down-time from software error. Zero loss of any data. In 9 years!

We have accomplished all of the above with a volunteer team, no funding, and almost no marketing to the industry, our partner shelters, or our users. Imagine what would be possible with financial backing that could help spread AdoptMeApp to many more shelters around the country and help our partner shelters acquire and inspire more users! There are so many more adoptable pet stories that could be told, so many shelter volunteers that could experience the joy of directly helping pets find homes, so many more lives that could be saved.

AdoptMeApp is a great fit for an acquiring entity:

  • Trusted and respected by volunteers, fosters, and staff at our partner shelters
  • Beloved by our users who are passionate about the power of captioned photos and videos embedded in the pet profiles to attract adopters
  • Could quickly be expanded to encompass hundreds more shelters
    • Can easily, with some engineering work, be integrated with other animal management systems
  • Ease of bringing up new shelters. It only takes a few hours once we have the real-time feed or API with animal status information (from the animal management system)
  • Potential to become the virtual equivalent of “Best Friends” because the users of AdoptMeApp span across shelters — this is an opportunity to create a powerful online community of shelter and rescue volunteers.
  • Can generate revenue through a variety of ways — immediately with the sponsorship system; in the future with a sister application called AdoptEDMeApp for distribution to the adopters. Many other possibilities. An example of sponsorship system within the AdoptMeApp diary can be seen here.
  • And finally, but a seriously incredible achievement – AdoptMeApp is a robust system that has never lost any data and has never been out of service due to software errors.
